BI Publisher versus PeopleSoft XML Publisher

This question came up in our Best Practices in XML Publisher webinar yesterday.

What advantage does the BI Publisher product provide over the delivered XML Publisher functionality?

An Excellent question, Jay.  You can think of the delivered XML Publisher functionality to be an OEM version of the full-use BI Publisher product.

In other words, Oracle provides a limited-use license of BI Publisher for use with PeopleSoft with the components to allow it to integrate and work with PeopleSoft.  This means that there are two main differences between what you get with your PeopleSoft license, and what you'd have to pay extra for:

  • You are restricted to PeopleSoft data for the source of your XML Publisher reports.  In other words, if you wanted to write an XML Publisher report against Siebel or a custom system (non-PeopleSoft) that you have, your license does not cover it and you would have to purchase BI Publisher.
  • The packaging of XML Publisher is part of your PeopleTools install.  This means that much of the features of the stand-alone product that overlaps with what you get with PeopleTools aren't delivered with XML Publisher and PeopleSoft (such as the stand-alone content library, output management, and many of the SDK's).  However, the features of the reports themselves such as crosstabs, charts, etc. are all available to you.

Therefore, if you are only planning to use XML Publisher against PeopleSoft and leverage PeopleSoft's reporting infrastructure, your PeopleSoft license will be sufficient.  However, if you want to start using it more widely, Oracle would be happy to sell you a license for BI Publisher.
